A LIFE-CHANGING EXPERIENCE

From Rome to the World: How AUR’s creative community shapes global voices

Updated: Feb 4

At The American University of Rome, we believe that an education grounded in creativity, community, and global perspective can transform lives - and shape culture. The story of alumnus Marwan Moussa illustrates this beautifully.

When Moussa graduated in 2016 with a degree in Film and Digital Media, he carried more than academic credits; he brought with him a renewed passion for music sparked by late-night jam sessions with fellow students in Rome. That spark ignited a career that has since made him one of the most influential voices in contemporary Arab hip-hop.

His 2021 album Flo-Rida broke streaming records, and by 2025 he ranked among the most-streamed Arab rappers around the world, with hundreds of millions of plays on major platforms and features in Rolling Stone and GQ Middle East. Musically innovative and culturally resonant, his work continues to evolve, most recently with The Man Who Lost His Heart, an intimate album exploring grief with emotional depth and artistic courage.

For donors, Moussa’s journey underscores the power of investment in faculty, curricula, and creative spaces that invite exploration. Supporting outstanding educators, mentoring programs, and experiential opportunities enables students to discover and refine their voices in ways that extend far beyond the classroom. The creative confidence nurtured at AUR doesn’t just launch careers; it contributes to cultural dialogue and global artistic expression.

When we invest in faculty development and student-centred programming, we help ensure that the next Marwan Moussa - whoever they are and wherever they come from - has the tools, the mentorship, and the environment to flourish. The ripple effects go beyond individual achievement; they shape how the world hears, sees, and understands new perspectives.
