A LIFE-CHANGING EXPERIENCE

Turning opportunity into impact: How experiential learning changes lives at AUR

Updated: Feb 4

At The American University of Rome, experiential learning is more than a pedagogical choice - it's a promise to students that their education will prepare them for meaningful, purpose-driven lives. Internships are a central part of that promise, translating academic study into professional confidence, civic engagement, and tangible career outcomes.

Each year, AUR students take on internships across Rome, Italy, and Europe, working in fields that span diplomacy, international business, cultural heritage, and the creative industries. These placements are not observational; students are trusted with real responsibility, contributing to organizations whose work shapes policy, culture, and global exchange.

For students in International Relations and Global Politics, internships at institutions such as the European Parliament and international embassies provide an early window into public service and diplomacy. Exposure to policy-making processes, multilingual environments, and cross-cultural negotiation often clarifies students’ academic paths and strengthens their commitment to graduate study or international careers.

For International Relations & Global Politics student Sofia Foscarini, an internship in the office of Hon. Chiara Gemma at the European Parliament offered rare access to the inner workings of European governance. Working closely with parliamentary staff, Sofia supported committee activities, voting preparations, legislative dossiers, and policy briefings. Observing how “ideas, documents, and meetings are transformed into decisions that influence millions of citizens,” she described the experience as both professionally demanding and personally formative. The internship ultimately helped Sofia clarify her academic path, strengthening her ambition to pursue graduate study in European Policy and Government.

Elsewhere, students apply analytical and creative skills in equally transformative ways—supporting international trade initiatives, preserving historical archives, or contributing to professional design and media projects. In many cases, these experiences lead directly to job offers, long-term professional relationships, or a sharpened sense of purpose that guides life after graduation.

For donors, these outcomes speak directly to impact. Investment in internships and experiential learning supports more than individual students; it strengthens AUR’s ability to connect education with opportunity. Funding helps remove financial barriers, expand partnerships, and ensure that talented students—regardless of background—can access formative professional experiences.

The result is a multiplier effect: confident graduates, stronger global networks, and alumni who carry AUR’s values into their careers and communities. By supporting experiential learning at AUR, donors help turn potential into action—and education into lasting influence.
